キャロライン・ケネディ駐日米大使が、イルカの追い込み漁を批判するツイートを投稿をして話題になりました。
米国政府はイルカの追い込み漁に反対します。イルカが殺される追い込み漁の非人道性について深く懸念しています。

米国政府を代表した意見とのことですが、他のアメリカ人はどのように考えているのでしょうか?
この件に関して、アメリカのインターネットの政治評論チャネルの”The Young Turks” が取り上げていましたので紹介します。
この、”The Young Turks” は、リベラル/プログレッシブの政治的立場をとる放送局です。
リベラル/プログレッシブな主張の特徴は、既成概念や保守的な考えに挑戦するもので、例として、同性婚の支持、国民皆保険の支持、銃規制の強化、大麻の合法化の容認、裕福層への富の集中への反対といった、既成概念や保守的な考え方に対立するものです。
次の動画では、左側の女性が、アメリカも他国の文化をとやかく言える立場ではないのでは、と主張しています。もちろん、この動画のコメンテーターが全てのアメリカ市民を代表している訳ではありませんが、米国でどのようにこの問題が考えられているかの一例です。
1:30 頃に真ん中の男性が次のように投げかけます。
“They are actually eating it for the most part so this isn’t just for sport, and as I said, this has been going on for a long long time, so I think this brings up a lot of interesting things: What right do we have to tell other countries what their traditions should and should not be.”
「イルカ漁は食用捕獲で、ただのスポーツとしてではなく、しかも、とても長い間続けられていました。ここで興味深い問題は、我々が他の国の伝統がこうあるべきだ、こうあるべきではないと言える権利があるのか、ということです。」
左側の女性は、次のように意見を述べています。
(2:47頃 ) “I feel like it’s very difficult for us to be judgmental towards other cultures, especially when it comes to this particular issue, because we don’t have a great track record when it comes to our factory farms. Pigs are very smart, right? And we kill them in mass on a daily basis. So, do we do so in humane ways? In a lot of cases, no, we don’t. I mean I think that we are trying to pass regulations to make it humane, but the nature of our meat consumption makes that virtually impossible. So I feel like before we start judging other cultures in the way they behave, we reflect ourselves and some of our practices and I think it would be better to be critical at that stage…”
「この個別の問題に関して、私たちが、他の文化に対して批判的になるのは難しいと思います。特に、我々の家畜農場の事を考えれば。 豚は賢いですよね? でも我々は日常的に大量に殺します。人道的に殺しますか? ほとんどの場合、違うでしょう。 人道的な方法による規制を作ろうと試みていても、肉の消費量からみて殆ど不可能でしょう。ですので、他国の文化を批判する前に、自分たちのやり方を顧みて、そしてやっと批判できるのではないかと思います。」
(5:10頃 )”And I think a lot of people will see animals like dolphins like, dolphins are cute. There’s like an emotional connection to it. And for some reason, we justify slaughtering cows and pigs and chickens because that’s part of our culture. That’s what we are used to eating. We’re not used to eating dolphin, right? In Japan they eat dolphin meat. So, for them their perception of that animal is completely different.”
「そして、多くの人が、イルカはかわいいと思っているという事。そこには感情的な繋がりがあります。しかしどういう訳か、牛や豚や鶏を屠殺することは正当化します。それは、私たちの文化だから。それが我々が食べ慣れているものだからです。私たちはイルカを食べ慣れていないでしょう? 日本ではイルカ肉を食べるのです。つまり、彼らにとってはイルカという動物への認識が完全に違うということ。」
日本人でもイルカ肉は食べたことがない人が多いと思いますが、それ以外の部分では日本人でイルカ漁を支持する人の意見に近い主張だと思います。
アメリカ人にも色んな考えの人がいるのでしょうが、リベラルな政治的な主張を持つアメリカ人の考え方の一つの例といえるでしょう。
